Students spend a week at a Spiritan Mission in San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic. We work together with teens at Nuestra Senora de la Esperanza (Our Lady of Hope) Parish in Barrio Villa Liberacion to run a day camp for children in the barrio. The focus of the camp is structured play and mentorship for children who often miss out on “typical” childhood fun.
In addition to running the camp, students engage in Dominican culture through food, dance, and exploration of the area. The week becomes much more about sharing experiences with the Dominican teens and children and the relationships formed during their time there.
The Spiritan Mission was founded in 2004 following a need to minister to the refugees of Hurricane George in 1998. Duquesne has partnered with Our Lady of Hope since 2008.
