The trip to Mullens, WV offers students an experience of rural poverty and issues faced by this community. We partner with the Mullens Opportunity Center (MOC), the Rural Appalachian Improvement Lead (RAIL) and the local St.Vincent de Paul chapter to work on community-driven projects to improve the Mullens area. Through construction of high-tunnel green houses, home repair, and community gardens, students gain an understanding of how to address some of the needs experienced by those in rural poverty.
The students also explore the area and learn about the rich history of West Virginia in addition to the coal mining and lumber industry’s impact on the environment in this area and the people who are impacted.
Duquesne has traveled to Wyoming County, WV since 1988.
